What is a social, historical, cultural context and how might it influence the media text? (Cuffs)

In 2013 same sex marriage was legalised and in 2014 the first same sex marriage occurred.  This part of historical and social context influenced Cuffs by having a homosexual character, and have this part of the characters identity shown as 'normal' and perfectly acceptable. In Cuffs, the audience knows that homosexuality is represented as acceptable because when Jake comes out, Ryan did not react at all. The fact that same sex marriage was legalised around the time of the making of cuffs, influenced cuffs by showing their acceptance. They also may have included a gay character because it was probably an 'exciting' or hot topic around the time.

In 2010, there was a rise of migrants and immigrants in the 2010's, with polish migrants of the highest population (2.4%). Cuffs featured a scene in which a polish female character shoplifts. The social and cultural context of the rise of polish migrants influenced cuffs to include a polish character. Cuffs represented this character as a criminal and crazy as she begins to strip on the streets. This most likely does no good as it feeds into or creates a stereotype of immigrants and migrants being criminals, or 'uncleanly'. This can even alter the audiences political view on the matter.

During the time of the making of Cuffs, the death rate from drug misuse increased rapidly to an astonishingly high statistic. The character 'Ryan' who was a suicidal man on drugs was most likely influenced by this statistic.

    2. A brilliant response to a 10 mark question.
You have used a clear structure.

      Mark - 10/10 - Band 1

      5/10 Band 2

As the marking criteria states you have explained how social contexts can influence television programmes by giving either a detailed description of one context with a sophisticated explanation of how it influences programmes with reference to 'Cuffs, or an effective description of a number of social contexts with an explanation of their influence on programmes.

Make sure to put these corrections in green!

      - Please get into the habit of writing 'Cuffs' with a capital C and single quotation marks ''.
